More than 1,200 students audition at the MTCA Open Call for the chance to be cast in one of three high-energy production numbers featured in the MTCA Finale.
Cast lists are posted first thing Friday morning. After two fast-paced rehearsals with the MTCA Creative Team, they step onto the Main Stage at the MTCA Finale.
The MTCA Festival kicks off with a true-to-life audition experience modeled after professional musical theatre open calls. ALL students participate. Designed to teach the skills needed for auditioning in the real world, this experience blends training, performance, and opportunity. Students begin by working with the MTCA Creative Team, learning audition tips and gaining insight into what casting professionals look for. They are then taught a short musical theatre-style combo before participating in a live audition.
Each student auditions in front of industry professionals alongside peers from various attending groups, mirroring the energy and format of real New York auditions. It’s an empowering way to start the weekend, offering every student the opportunity to be seen, celebrated, and considered for a spot in the MTCA Finale.
Students from each group will be selected.
Today self-tape auditions are more important than ever. MTCA gives students the chance to learn, practice, and grow in this essential skill. Prior to the festival, students submit a vocal self-tape audition, guided by clear instructions and a detailed how-to video created by the MTCA team. This resource is designed to help students build confidence on camera, understand professional expectations, and gain experience with a process used widely in college auditions and the professional theatre world. Select students will be invited to a callback on Thursday evening, where they’ll continue the audition journey in person. Whether students are just learning or refining their technique, the self-tape experience is a valuable step toward becoming audition-ready in today’s evolving industry.
